Search Engine Friendly Web Page Design
|
Most people seem to agree that a website’s content is the most important factor that the search engines will consider when they rank a page. However, what they don’t know is that web page design is also very important when it comes to search engine optimization.
When optimizing a page's design, the first thing to consider is your website’s page size. Most web designers today use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to keep the page size short, clean and orderly. Conventional tables, on the other hand, will take up lots of Web disk space and therefore will increase the required time for a page to be indexed.
The internal site navigation (site map) is also important because it is the only way to allow for search engines’ spiders to follow through your website and index all your pages. The most reliable way to ensure that a search engine robot will not miss any pages, use text links in your navigation menu. However, if you wish to have a JavaScript or a Flash menu, you can include a text link version at the bottom your pages for search engine robots to crawl.
It is not recommended to use frames on web pages. Frame-based pages do not allow for unique URLs, which makes indexing pages separately problematic. Although there are ways to get around this problem, Google has also suggested web masters to avoid using frames.
Some experts have noticed that the search engine robots do consider where the content on a page appears. Most search engines classify content that is closer to the top of the page as more important than elsewhere. Many webmasters will thus place their content right after the header, and some may even use CSS positioning techniques to generate a content-first template in order for the content to appear before the navigation menu.
It is a known fact that search engines ignore Flash powered web pages as the crawlers cannot index the content from within a Flash plug-in. In this case, it is advised to create an HTML based site with minimum Flash plug-ins than to have a full Flash website.
Keeping a web page’s design simple will facilitate crawlers to index the content of your site. As far as SEO is concerned, a simple web page design with rich content is the key.
